Should School days be Longer?

Kia ora, this week for writing our goal was Vary sentence beginnings, structures and length. Write simple and compound sentences (by using conjunctions). Use some complex sentences. Use simple and compound sentences with a variety of beginnings, lengths and structures. Use some complex sentences to create pace, flow and interest. Use linking words and phrases to link some paragraphs. We needed to write a perseverance text including an amazing complex sentence, my topic was, should school days be shorter. Have a look at my writing.

Should School Days be Shorter?

In my opinion we should not, you may be thinking no way they should be shorter. But don’t you want your kid to be successful?

Firstly, in order for your kid to learn, they must have a long workshop. Because some kids need more time than others, because everyone is different. Their question could remain unsolved, since they did not have time to ask a teacher.

Secondly, almost everyone wants longer play times don’t they? You can’t have longer play with less time in the day, because remember we go to school to learn not to play. And if we had shorter days we would be playing for half the day.

Lastly,  You will have way more time with your friends! Now don’t tell me you don’t want that. You can become more social, and so when you leave school you have friends and now how to make new ones.

So this is why I think that 6 hours at school is perfectly fine , because your kid can not only learn more, but become more social and they could also have more play time! So have a think about it.

Can you find my complex sentence?

Perfect Persuasive Writing!

Kia ora, this week for lock down our writing goal was, Vary sentence beginnings, structures and length. Write simple and compound sentences (by using conjunctions). Use some complex sentences. Use simple and compound sentences with a variety of beginnings, lengths and structures. Use some complex sentences to create pace, flow and interest. Use linking words and phrases to link some paragraphs.  We are writing about persuasive writing, my topic was about. Children under 13 should not be left home alone.I have also included different types of sentences, have a look down below.

Children under 13 should not be allowed home alone.

Hi, this is why I think children under 13 should not be allowed home alone. Would you want your kid to be all alone by themselves? This is why I think they should be with a 14 year old or older.

Firstly, your child is only young and has probably not had lessons on how to use a fire extinguisher, and what would happen if your house caught on fire your child would be all alone not knowing what to do.

Secondly, if your child is young and has someone younger with them, what if they had to perform CPR they probably have not had a first aid course yet, and so that could be the reason why your child dies, but a way to fix this is just to stay home with them.

Lastly, your kid could be really responsible, but what if they decided that they would do something dangerous. They might not know what could happen, but if you were there you could stop them and save spending your afternoon at the hospital.

So just remember.  That your child should be home with someone at all times ( someone who is 14 or older) because what if there was fire, what if someone needed CPR and what if they did something dangerous.

Do you agree with me?

Hobbies are Awesome!

Kia ora, over lock down one of our create task for reading was to write a story about your hobbies. I have made a piece of writing about gymnastics, as I do gymnast as one of my hobbies, I have included things about gym, and about hobbies. Have a look down below.

Gymnastics!

Hi, I'm Beth, and I have basically dedicated my entire life to my hobby. My hobby is gymnastics, I have been doing gymnastics for many years. And now I do 16 hours of gymnastics a week.

I love my hobby, why? Because not only am I having fun doing gymnastics, I am doing a lot of fitness, which is good for my body, and I am making strong friendships outside of school. Some of my friends from gym include Ava, Aaliyah, Paige, Kyla, Ella, Grace and many more.

But gymnasts make everything look easy, but really it’s not. You need a strong growth mindset to get through the hard days. In order to do well in a competition you must train super hard, do looks of conditioning and heaps of hours a week.

And this is why you have to enjoy your hobby. You can’t just do something because your friends are doing it, or because it is a popular hobby. You have to do what your heart desires to do. Even if your hobby is not popular and none of your friends are doing it, you do what makes you happy.

What are your hobbies?

Wonderful Writing!

Kia ora, Over lock down we have been having lots of google meets, and for writing our goal was Vary sentence beginnings, structures and length. Write simple and compound sentences (by using conjunctions). Use some complex sentences. Use simple and compound sentences with a variety of beginnings, lengths and structures. Use some complex sentences to create pace, flow and interest. Use linking words and phrases to link some paragraphs. Our task was to write a persuasive piece of writing, our topic was. Should all school be online? Take a look down below to understand why I disagree.

Should all Schooling be Online?

Hi, do you think kids should be online or at school? This is my reasoning on why I think schooling should not be all online. I understand that in these times online schooling is all we have, but I am looking into the future.

Firstly, When your child grows old and isn’t at school anymore what friends are they gonna have. Even though you could make friends on your google meets, you don’t get to say “ Hey I’m Beth wanna be friends” in the middle of your math class. So where I am heading on this is, if you want your kid to be social, then send them to in person school.

Secondly, Your child's eyesight can be hugely impacted by too much screen time. Doing online school you are on your computer almost all day, which can affect your eyesight. So how to fix this? You may be wondering, it’s easy, just send them to school in person.

Lastly, at school if you forget about a workshop, someone is always there to come and get you and bring you to your workshop. But at home your parents probably aren’t paying attention to where you're supposed to be 247, so your kid could easily miss an important workshop. Now again a way to fix this, just send them to in person school.

So these are just 3 reasons why you should send your kid to school in person, but truly there are many more. But remember what I have taught you today, about your kid being social, having good eyesight and not missing a workshop. I think that these reasons surely can convince you to send your kid to school in person.

Do you agree or disagree with this topic?

Awesome Lego Reflection

Kia ora, last Friday house of bricks Lego came  to our school for the years 5-8 to do 3 rotations to work on our grit and perseverance for our PBL. What does perseverance mean? perseverance  means keep pushing even when you think you are not good enough you just have to have some grit and determination. for the 3 rotations we did the following, building a car, a tower, and doing a mosaic and pass the brick read my writing to understand more about the rotations.

My favourite Lego activity was the mosaic up in Tumu because I loved being able to work by myself and use my own ideas for my own work, I also loved being able to use my imagination to create a piece of art.

My least favourite Lego activity was passing the bricks because it was hard seeing my house that I worked on turn into something completely different to what I had in mind.

The activity that tested my perseverance the most was building the cars because I had to figure out what was going to be the best and fastest way to build a car that would stay together and go the longest.

The most challenging activity was building the tower because it was hard having only 10 ish minutes to complete a very tall tower that would win the competition.

I enjoyed working collaboratively with others because I liked having more than 1 brain to figure out a smart way to build the Lego. I also liked being able to share my ideas with others to help them out.

Do you show perseverance?

The Yellow Umbrella

Kia ora, this week we watched a short movie about a girl and her mum donating some toys to an orphanage but then all of a sudden the girls yellow umbrella was gone, this is a story about showing empathy.  Empathy is all about putting yourself in someone else shoes. Down below is my story.

The Yellow Umbrella

Early one gloomy morning as the sun rose, the old wooden creaky door to Miss Elem’s Home For Children slowly swung open. The young miserable girl with the eye-catching popping yellow umbrella anxiously tiptoed into the orphanage before finding a great safe place for her umbrella. Staring at the yellow umbrella not wanting to be seen, Boris quickly swung his head back around the door frame so that he was out of anyone's view. Standing off to the side, the girl observed the exciting scene as the children peered into the box for fabulous hidden treasures. The girl smiled as she watched the little boy zooming around the room like a race car at full speed. Her Smile straight away faded as she looked back at the umbrella stand and all she saw were wet sloppy puddles, her beloved umbrella had vanished into thin air.

Do you show empathy in your life?

Margret Mahy Trip.

Kia ora on the 20th of May me and my hub went into the city with my hub for our PBL. This is a recount about what happened. First me and my group went to Victoria square. We saw some really cool things like statues, water fountains and we also saw a big beautiful pou. Our task was to draw a little bit of the pou it was quite a challenge with all the little details. Next we went to Margret Mahy playground, when we got there we went on a scavenger hunt to look for a few things. After we had a look at all the art on the ground there were some amazing things that I had not noticed before. Our task was to tras over some of the art with crayons and paper. Soon after we went to look at some mats that were placed in the city after the 2011 earthquakes. We were not able to look at all 13 mats but we did look at number 11, 12 and 13 Just after looking at the mats we went to feed the Tuna which are eels, I fed a big one. I think it was female because females are bigger than the males. I learnt a lot about tuna, like how Tunas do not find out their gender until they are 10-12 years old ,And they can only travel up to 1km per hour.# Then we went on this huge Waka which is a canoe. It was such a cool experience being able to be on a real waka with lots of people. We learnt how to use the aors . We went up and down a part of the Avon river. It was very tiring on my arms but still really fun. Some of my favourite parts of the trip was tracing over some art in Margeret Mahy and feeding the Tuna. It was so exciting. Something I learnt was That the Margaret Mahy playground used to have a pool on its grounds named after one of Margret Mahy's friends Elsie Locke. The thing I found the most interesting was learning the story behind all of the mats around the city. This trip has helped me with my PBL because I have so many ideas like, to have some mats around our school in front of each of the hubs to welcome people into our Hubs, and along with the mats we can have some maps to find more mats around our school just like the ones in the city.

Have you ever been to the Christchurch city?

Learning langues!

Hi this week we are learning Maori and have  put together a slide show. We had to include 2 sentences. How to say what is your name Ko wai tō ingoa? and where you are from Nō hea koe? We also needed to add as many Kupu o te wiki ( Words of the week) as we could. I have created a slide show with 2 people introducing themselves to each other and explaining what they like to do Nō hea koe (Where they are from) and Ko wai tō ingoa (what is there name).

Question: Do you know how to respond to these new sentence I have learnt?
